Systems & Standards - Fire

The electronic fire systems of primary interest to FSA Members are described briefly below.  More detailed information concerning the regulation of, and standards applicable to, the installation of these systems is also provided in the form of individual downloadable documents – simply click on the system title.

Most of the standards referred to here are available to Members at preferential rates.  For information please contact the ECA Membership Department at membership@eca.co.uk or SELECT at stationery@select.org.uk in Scotland.

EMERGENCY LIGHTING SYSTEMS

The purpose of emergency lighting, anti-panic lighting and standby lighting is to ensure that the main fire exit routes from a building or open and high risk areas are sufficiently lit in the case of a mains failure, in order to allow persons to safely evacuate the areas or premises. Manual fire alarm points, first aid points, fire fighting and safety equipment should also be clearly lit, so that it can be clearly identified.

Typically the equipment used would include self-contained emergency lighting units, centrally powered emergency light - slave units, various fire exit guidance signs, battery powered light fitting, which are part of the overall lighting system for the premises.

FIRE DETECTION AND ALARM SYSTEMS

Fire detection and alarm systems are designed to alert persons, and in certain cases the Fire Authorities (FRS), that a fire incident has been detected.

Systems are made up of:

  • Control and indication panels
  • Smoke, heat and fire detectors
  • Warning and activation devices
  • Communication equipment
  • Plus means of transmitting alarm indication to the FRS.
