FBU and FSA collaborate to improve awareness of fire systems standard

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) and Fire and Security Association (FSA) are pleased to announce the publication of a short guide to the British Standard for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings which is contained in BS 5839-1.

The publication follows a close association between the two organisations on the guide which will be issued to members of the FBU in order to improve awareness of the appropriate standard for fire detection and alarm systems.

The Fire Brigades Union works closely with a number of organisations in promoting high standards of fire protection and prevention but a joint venture on a publication such as this is quite unique.

Matt Wrack, General Secretary of the Fire Brigades Union said: “With 45,000 members, the FBU is by far the largest representative body of uniformed fire and rescue service staff including those who have responsibility for the enforcement of fire safety legislation in occupied buildings. The FBU is committed to securing the highest standards to best ensure the safety of the public and fire-fighters. For that reason, the FBU is pleased to be associated with the production and distribution of this short guide to BS 5839-1.”

The guide is a bespoke FBU re-drafting of one of the FSA’s existing guides in the highly acclaimed FSA Short Guide Series, which are distributed free of charge to all FSA and ECA member companies.

Stefan Hay, Head of FSA said: “The FSA is honoured to have been given the opportunity to work and consult with the Fire Brigades Union to produce this short guide. The FSA strongly advocates the use of competent persons, verified by Third Party Certification schemes, in all installation activities and believes that this guide will be useful, not only in reducing the number of false and unwanted fire signals, but also in raising the standard of installation activity and, therefore, further safeguarding premises, property and life.”
