Peter Greenwood Award - 19th October 2010

 PETER GREENWOOD AWARD 2010

At the Drapers Hall in the City of London on the 19th October 2010 the FSA (Fire and Security Association) will hold a Gala Dinner preceded by a conference on behalf of the Fire and Security Systems industry.  At this prestigious event the recipient of the Peter Greenwood Award will be announced.  The Peter Greenwood Award is the longest established individual award in the security profession and has been existence since Peter’s untimely death in January 1995.

In his position as Chairman of the Security Industry Lead Body (SILB) Implementation Group, Peter worked tirelessly to enhance the cohesion and professionalism of the security industry as it was then.  Besides the introduction of the then new NVQ’s (National Vocational Qualifications) he also had a clear vision of the industry working closely together, providing rewards for its members and top quality service on behalf of its clients.  After Peter passed away Una Riley took over as Chairman of the implementation Group and felt it appropriate to create an annual award to be offered to an individual who demonstrated the same kind of enthusiasm and selfless concern for the industry which Peter himself unerringly demonstrated.  It was people like Peter that helped shape the industry to become the profession that it is today.

Over the years the organisations presenting the honour have changed from NACOSS, JSIC, BSIA and in more recent years to the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals (WCoSP). The format has been that the Master of the day of the WCoSP co-presents the award with Past Master – Una Riley who has been the guardian of the Peter Greenwood Award since 1995.  Peter was the Head of the Electrical Contractors Association (ECA) - Security Group and was involved with its Fire Group and was a founder member of the SILB.  Ironically, the Award has come home...it is now with the FSA which rests on the foundation of the original Fire and Security Groups of the ECA.  Stefan Hay the head of the FSA said.  “I am delighted that the Peter Greenwood Award will form part of the ceremony at the FSA Gala Dinner”.  The award will be co-presented by the Master of the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals – Don Randall MBE”.

The panel of judges will include the Commissioner of the City of London – Mike Bowron, the Master of the WCoSP – Don Randall, the Head of the FSA – Stefan Hay, the President of the ECA - Diane Johnson, Raymond Clarke – Managing Director of SAFE (who worked with Peter on the SILB), Stephen Adams – General Manager of BAFE, the Publisher of Professional Security Magazine – John Culley (who also worked with Peter on the SILB) and Baroness Ruth Henig – Chairman of the SIA.  The on-line nomination form can be found on the FSA website (click here) and links from various other industry websites.  If you would like to nominate someone for the Peter Greenwood Award the criteria has always been the contribution of an individual to the security systems profession.
